Thanks for showing an interest in the Type 1 Diabetes Project. I’ve put together this short introduction to give you an overview of the project.
My name is Liam and I’m 26 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2002 and generally had poor control until recently. I still have a long way to go (my HbA1c is now 60) but I feel like I’ve learnt a lot and have lots of ideas on how to improve diabetes care. Here’s a link to a blog post about me.
I am almost finished my PhD in health economics. Economics is not just about money, it’s also about how people make decisions and in health economics, we are interested in how people make health related decisions. Through my studies, I’ve learned how healthcare systems work and built networks with consultants and health psychologists working in diabetes. Talking to these people about my ideas inspired me to start The Type 1 Diabetes Project. Initially, it was intended to be a research project but after discussing it with different people, I decided starting a business was the best way to approach this. My main interest is in Type 1 Diabetes but some solutions may also be relevant to other long-term illnesses such as Type 2 Diabetes and Asthma. Therefore, I started Adelie Health as the company.
Adelie Health is the name of the company and is the name that will appear on official documents. The Type 1 Diabetes Project is part of Adelie Health.
The Type 1 Diabetes Project
I started The Type 1 Diabetes Project to develop ideas which could make managing diabetes easier. Unfortunately, I’m not a scientist who is going to cure diabetes in a laboratory, nor am I a technology expert who is going to build a closed loop system/ artificial pancreas. I’m interested in the behaviours and decision making of people with type 1 diabetes. I’m also interested in how we can make small improvements in diabetes care which can add up and make a big difference in people’s lives.
For The Type 1 Diabetes Project to be a success, I need your input. I have my experiences of type 1 diabetes but everyone has different experiences so I want to make sure there are a group of people who can offer their thoughts on what direction to go. To help make sure I have the people with a wide variety of experiences it would be great if you could complete the short questionnaire below. This will help me understand how you would like to contribute.
Right now, I want to build a strong online presence. I want to be able to show people (based on Facebook likes and Twitter followers) that people with type 1 diabetes are interested in what we are doing. I’m also looking into building a device that will help people manage and track their diabetes. This is in early stages but will need lots of feedback to make sure its works and I’ll be looking to form a type 1 diabetes advisory panel in the near future.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Liam Mc Morrow
